Lindores Abbey in Fife has been visited over the years by some of the most famous characters in Scottish history, from William Wallace to John Knox; however it is as the spiritual home of Scotch whisky that perhaps the Abbey is most famous. This is due to its links with the Exchequer Rolls of 1494 which states that Friar John Cor paid duty on eight bolls of malt in order to make aqua vitae for King James IV and this payment of taxes is acknowledged to be the earliest written reference to whisky distillation in our Scottish history.
The Abbey is now an extremely picturesque ruin and it sits opposite the site of what is one of Scotland’s newest and most exciting whisky distilleries boasting a unique history. The distillery and the ‘Spiritual Home’ a beautifully constructed interpretation and luxurious entertaining space, opened in the autumn of 2017. We are one of the only distilleries in the world where you can dine in the Still Hall amongst the gleaming copper stills, looking out over the magnificent abbey ruins.
Scotch whisky, history and architecture are hugely popular in Scotland and Lindores Abbey has these qualities in spades and we are delighted to be able to offer general tours as well as bespoke personal tours with the founder of the distillery project, Drew McKenzie Smith. We also host specialised whisky tastings, private dinners, meetings, events, BBQ’s and picnics in a variety of glorious locations including our Cloister which boasts a 52 foot aok dining table. We can also arrange a diverse selection of entertainments such as falconry displays, treasure hunts, fetes, open air performances, archery, highland games etc. Groups of up to fourteen can dine around the large oak table in the dining room of Lindores Abbey House and there is a large formal drawing room which is ideal for drinks and cocktail receptions. The Abbey ruins also lend themselves beautifully to marquee, tipi or yurt installation.
Helen has had over twenty years’ experience in the luxury exclusive use market, looking after some of Scotland’s finest houses and so you can relax in the knowledge that your guests will be in safe hands.
